Jai struggled, falling to his knees, hands splayed on the flooring before him. His breath came in short, painful gasps, eyes vision blurred and hazy. He was slowly making progress in dragging himself out of the maelstorm caused by Alfar's death, clawhold by clawhold. His jaw clenched and unclenched, mouth moving as though he was speaking, though he was seized by a silence. He finally managed to claw his way to some sanity before claws curled into his hair, jerking him to his feet. He cried out soundlessly, before his breath was cut off by an arm that pressed against his throat.

"See you in hell, my son." Those simple words were laced with bitterness, and a vague part of Jai's mind recognized the voice and caused him to start weakly fighting back. Something cold slid beneath his ribs and buried itself deep in his heart. Jai went slack with surprise; there was no pain, really. The blade was so sharp it cut through him with little effort. What did hurt was the jerking back of the dagger. Jai cried out weakly and he was roughly dropped, causing him to fall to the floor ungracefully. The darkness closed in on him bit by bit.

Barnabus had gotten his revenge after nearly three-hundred-years. The Strigoi let out a hiss, and vanished into the shadows.</sub>

_{Ember nodded when sudden pain shot through her chest, she felt it as the dagger slid dip into Jai's heart. She screamed once more and fell to her knees, she felt every heartbeat, every painful breath, she felt everything. Slowly, she came into her senses, but instead of catching her breath. She dove right back into the bond, what she found shocked her to her very core. Though she had known. She had deep in heart. That's why she gave Jai such a hard time. Tentatively, she called out to him,Jai? Jai! Listen to me, I'm coming. Don't you dare give up on me. I just found you. I'm not gonna lose you now. she hissed in his mind, blind determination rising up in her. She retracted herself from his mind,"Dad! He's hurt!"she screamed, phasing into the fast creature she could. She shot out of the room and out of the house. Her mind reached out to Jai's,Jai, damn it! Don't you dare give up on me.}

Unole didn't hesitate. He gave an apologetic look to Doru, who simply said "Go." The Schimba King barreled after his daughter, shifting into a peregrine falcon.

Some part of Jai stirred gently at Ember's mental cries, and a weak brush, gentle and loving, against her mind was his only response. Deep inside of Jai's mind, a battle raged...

He was standing, but he did not know where; he could not pinpoint his location. When he tried to extend his mind, a searing pain flared through his body, nearly driving him to his knees. An odd chanting flooded his ears and mind and when Jai looked up, the hazy figures of women surrounded him.
"Jai Templar, you are Fated to die this day." Their chanting resumed, and Jai felt himself being pulled away, as though he were being jerked and pulled from his body. Some part of his mind recognized this as death and he half-heartedly fought. He had not heard Ember's cries and though he fought, he was so tired and the darkness was so inviting...

Almost instantly the chanting stopped, and Jai felt his spirit slump back into his ethereal form. It was dark around him, but he heard a familiar voice.

"It has been written in the scrolls of Fate for your death to occur this day, Jai Templar, but they do not control me so often as they think. I am Death itself, and today is not your day..."</sub>[/i]

_{Ember almost cried out in relief when she felt Jai's gently touch her mind, but not only did she feel his touch in her mind, but on her skin as well. She shot forward as she got her second wind, she wouldn't let him die on her, not when she had just found out they were life mates. Her father often talked about the pain of losing a life mate and she sure as hell was not gonna lose her's now. She landed lightly on her feet, phasing in the air,"Jai!"she screamed. Tears prickled behind her eyes as she rushed to side. She couldn't believe her eyes as she stared at the knife prodding from her life mates chest. Her spirit crumpled and she cried out as she gently placed Jai's head in her lap.}

<sub>Jai's often startling green eyes were blank, staring at the ceiling; but, miraculously, life still existed in him yet. His chest rose and fell in soft, anguished breaths, although his face was lack and lifeless. Blood had burbled up past his lips, seeping past the wound in the near centre of his chest. His skin was cool, and he didn't move even when Ember curled closer to him. He was fading, but he still clung to the very threads of life. He gurgled softly, his eyes darting back and forth unseeingly.

Unole swept in and landed at his daughter's side, narrowing his eyes at the sight of his best warrior reduced to such. In one smooth movement, he'd closed his hand around the knife's hilt and jerked it out, staunching the blood flow with his hand. "Ember," he said calmly, "find some towels. Be quick."

<sub>Ember gently laid Jai's head on the cool floor, she never run so fast in her life. She returned carrying an armful of towels."Is this enough?"she asked as she dropped them beside her father. She didn't give her father a chance to reply as she grabbed yet another armful of towels and dropped them beside her father. "Is he gonna be okay?"she asked as she began to pace. Anxiety rolled off the princess as she nervously played with her hands.

<sub>"He will not be if you continue to send such anxiety to him," Unole said gently. He plucked one of the towels off of the ground and pressed it against Jai's chest to slow the blood flow. "He will be better if we can get him to the tribe house, but I fear to move him. The blade was magic. 'Blessed' by a Cibarium, I think. If Jai had been any weaker, it most likely would have shattered his soul into a hundred of different shards. It would have been that much harder, and most likely impossible, to resuscitate him." He changed the towel, eyes narrowing. The magic of the blade had so far poisoned Jai, making him see what was not really there. He quietly began to push his own power into Jai, healing him agonizingly slowly.

Jai thrashed his in mind, terrible screams ripping themselves from his throat. The Strigoi poured over him, biting and chomping and poisoning. He couldn't see; he couldn't move; he could only scream, and scream, and scream...

<sub>Ember sighed as she settled down beside her newfound life mate,"You're right."he murmured as she closed her eyes and calmed herself down. Her breathing slowed as she sent hope and faith through the newfound bond as well. She took a deep breath as she dove into the recesses of her mind, Jai.. I'm so sorry. I didn't know.. I'm soo sorry. I hope one day you can forgive me. she whispered. Slowly, her eyes fluttered open and she stared at her father,"He's strong enough. He's going to make.. He has too. I just found him."she cried.

The princess phased all she wanted was Jai to live. That's it.

<sub>In the depth of Jai's mind, he become aware. The soft stirring of the bond caused him to snap out of his nightmares. In his mind's eye he spun around, seeing the crying face of Ember. "I'm okay," he wanted to say, reaching out to here. "I'm not dead. I'm okay. I'm not dead!" When he felt power that he recognized as Unole's stir in him, he gratefully allowed himself to sink into the blackness of unconsciousness.

To the outside world, Jai's breathing grew steady and calm and a soft, peaceful expression sank into his tired face.

Lauren's soft, small hands worked nimbly, effortless as she cooked the meal for her lord and Sovereign, Unole. Her soft, cascading brown hair was draped over her spine, where it brushed the small of her back; her gentle, glittering hazel eyes were focused intently on the cheese grater before her.

<sub>Alec stomped downstairs, his hair mussed and wearing nothing expect for a pair of baggy shorts, a chuckle sounded as he turned to watch the Pricolici girl leave. He took advantage of the closeness of the other species and often had different girls sneaking out of the houses. He tilted his head at Lauren,"What's for dinner?"he snarled. He felt that Lauren was beneath him. Everyone but his father was in Alec's world.

Ember turned to watch her father, having no sea what either were doing. She sat there dumbfounded as she gently stroked her life mate's hair. She didn't know how to make it up to Jai.</sub>
