The sun was just starting to rise, peaking over the tops of the trees on the far off horizon. The horizon was hazy with early morning fog, blurring the line between where the sky met the earth. Mercedes Wilde was just leaving the bunkhouse, her bag of gear for the track slung over her shoulder. The jockey’s gaze was downcast, and she seemed down. Not down in the sense of being sad, but anxiety seemed to be rolling off of her, making her shoulders stiffen, her walk straight, and her fingers jittery.
If there was thing that was true, Sadie was not herself, she hadn’t been herself for awhile now. During her break from racing, after she had had her subdural hematoma, she’d been the calm, happy go-lucky girl that adored everyone. But now... It seemed like she was a former shell of that, not talking very much, not being friendly or kind. She’d even gone as far as snapping at someone once for being too loud. This wasn’t the Sadie Cross Thoroughbred Racing Facility knew.
She was scared, and this fright is what had caused this sudden personality switch. She didn’t trust herself. She didn’t trust most of the people around her again, and frankly, she hated to admit this, but she knew she was being selfish. She knew that other people mattered, not just her, and she was completely breaking every rule she had been raised to do. Others come first, speak before you think, and keep a cool, calm head. She’d broken these numerous times already, and it was just growing worse.
She needed someone to talk to, someone that would listen and tell her everything was going to be alright, and if she did get hurt again, she would be able to pick up the pieces and continue on with life. But at the moment, she was stuck. She was stuck beyond a doubt. She needed someone to be there for her, but frankly, no one had been there for awhile. She felt alone, and tired of the mess.
Coming up beside her old, weathered maroon truck, she glanced over her shoulder with a frown. She’d convinced herself that nobody cared, and she was just going to be ignored until she could prove her worth again. And that was what she was going to do. She would prove it to, them, but first, she needed to find a decent mount. She cleared her throat and hopped up into the driver’s seat of the Ford Bronco. Sadie took a moment to adjust her mirrors and seat before pulling out of the driveway. Even early in the morning, there was waft of dust following her as she made her way down the dirt driveway that led away from the city.
The way to the track was a blur, and she barely realized that she had come to the track until she had noticed that she had parked. She shook her head to clear it before Sadie stepped out, her boots crunching on the gravel as she glanced around. There weren’t many other cars around, but she could hear the distant thud of hooves against the dirt around the track. She felt a familiar tug on her heart to get back into the irons, but it seemed like everything was trying to prevent her from getting back into the saddle. 561 WORDS NO TAGS OPEN THREAD OUT OF CHARACTER:

Brea was still fast asleep, having no clue about what was about to happen. She mumbled something inaudible, stirring slightly but not waking.

At some point while Sadie had been lost in thought, standing in the parking lot, a truck had eased in nearby. A lanky figure slept out and approached quietly, gravel crunching underneath softly as it shifted beneath his feet. He stopped just behind Sadie, gently wrapping his arms around her, one arm resting lightly around her waist while the other was around her shoulders, pulling her against his chest. His lip brushed just past her ear, navy blue eyes dark with concern.
"Talk to me, love."

Joedan watched her every move bluntly, subconsciously running his sinewy hand through his dark, tuck locks. His blue eye skimmed her facial expressions, taking in the aura and emotions she gave off with something of interest. She was being strange, at least, to him.

Kenton crept closer, being as quiet as he could, as not to wake the sleeping Brea. His face was alight with mischeif, and his eyes sparkled with trouble. When he was nearly a foot away. he practically tackled Brea, poking and tickling his sides and screamed playfully. “I GOT YOU!”
Down the way, a few of the horses shifted uneasily at this yell, and Kenton realized blantantly that he should’ve been a bit quieter, but no matter. He was waiting for Brea’s response, eyebrows raised high in arches as he pulled back slightly, waiting for Brea to wake up or something. 101 WORDS NO TAGS OPEN THREAD OUT OF CHARACTER:
