"the Highwayman's Footsteps" is a book by Nicola Morgan and is based on the poem, the Highwayman.
It is based in the late 1770's and 1780's, or rather, around the American Revolution. However the book and poem are not based upon War, but rather the smaller battles faced.
There are three people between whom you can choose to become. . .
a deserter : someone who leaves their home. Usually they rely on stealing to make their pay; in other words, they are the runaways of the 18th century.
a common thief : as said, they are the common thief. Generally they are poor and need a way to make ends meet, and in most cases they have a family they need to feed. Or they're just greedy and can't get a job.
the Highwayman : a man, typically on horseback, who holds up travelers at gunpoint in order to rob them.
typically they are all hidden amid the woods and keep to themselves; most of them are not bad people, just live rough lives. Some do it simple for the thrill. Often times, they are caught and shot. Some manage to live a life free, but not without being followed constantly.
or, you can choose an easier, or perhaps harder, life devoid of the chase :
There are the high-born, wealthy and educated ones with many luxuries and extra money in their pocket; the commoners, who have no value but to live a life making enough pay to feed themselves; the poor, who barely make pay and at times may live on the streets.
places you can go . . .
