"How do I do what? Live with what has happened? I have no choice. I did not choose this life. Costin murdered my mortal life, and so I am trapped in this existence." Malachi gave a soft sigh. "Your choice is made, little one, and you must now accept what has come to pass."
Lauren's hazel eyes narrowed slightly but she did not comply, instead lifting the pot and placing it on the desk. She sat the extra bowl and bread down next to it, tilted her head down slightly, and moved to leave. She had no interest in dealing with Alec's cruelty at the moment.
Jai gave a soft, rumbling purr of affection, holding her tight. "Ye can't break anythin' out o' me, lass," he huffed softly, reaching one hand up to play with her hair. He said nothing, just cuddling her.

Sarafina tilted her head, nodding,"I fear that one day I'll come to hate him."she whispered, turning to look at her mentor."Is it true? We're about to go to war?"she asked, her voice so low that it was barely audible.
Alec's anger rose, before Lauren even had a chance to turn he stood blocking her exit,"I said bow."he snarled, his eyes flashing. He tilted his head to peer down at the small Schimba, a growl ripped free of his throat. She reminded him of his sister and of his mother.
Ember shifted in his arms to look at him straight in his eyes,"I wish I could stay here forever."she murmured. Her face changed and she shivered,"I'm scared. Two of our own have been killed. I'm scared of losing you. I just found you. I almost lost you once and I'm ready to go through that again."she whispered, her eyes shut tightly.

"Only one has been killed," Jai responded gently, "and Alfar will be missed, though his soul resides in Shan-gri-la now. What's done is done, and we cannot bring Alfar back. We can only move forward and drive Costin to the ground for what he's done." Jai looked at her with a soft reverence. "It'll be okay, Ember. I'm harder to kill than that. My... my father took advantage of the death of Alfar and got me off-guard. We guards have a certain connection that allows us to know when one of us is hurt or killed. Alfar's death was so violent that it created a whirlwind of emotion amongst all the guards, and they all looked to me for guidance. Alfar's soul was slipping away at this time, and I had to make sure no one followed him. The grief that comes when one of our own dies is indescribable." He sighed.
Lauren glared at Alec. "I did," she hissed.
"I already hate him with all my being," Malachi responded. He nodded. "I'm afraid so.

Ember shivered, her eyes squeezing shut,"I know of that bond. My dad talked to me about it once."she wrapped her arms around his waist,"You died Jai. You were gone. I couldn't feel you. Jai, I was so scared. I thought I'd never be able to see you again.. I thought I would never hear your wonderful nagging voice again. I was so scared Jai and I still am."she buried her face in his chest. A stray tear slid down her cheek and her body trembled with unshed tears.
Alec's eyes flashed, he was a blur as he slammed her to the floor, his hand wrapped tightly around her throat,"Don't you ever talk to me like that again."he hissed, right back. "You're lucky I can't kill you. Not yet."he grinned,"But that doesn't mean I can't hurt you."he snapped. He slapped her, hard, and than let her up. He turned and headed for the soup.

Something broke in Lauren then, and she retaliated. She slammed into Alec, sending him flying; she watched as he struck the far wall. "Do not think me weak," she said, her voice utterly cold. "Do not think to control me with fear. You are a pitiful excuse for a Schimba, and I will not bow to you." With that, Lauren was gone.
"I know," Jai said softly. "I don't even know how to describe it." His eyes glazed over, and he simply shared the experience with his mate through their bond.
He was standing, but he did not know where; he could not pinpoint his location. When he tried to extend his mind, a searing pain flared through his body, nearly driving him to his knees. An odd chanting flooded his ears and mind and when Jai looked up, the hazy figures of women surrounded him.
"Jai Templar, you are Fated to die this day." Their chanting resumed, and Jai felt himself being pulled away, as though he were being jerked and pulled from his body. Some part of his mind recognized this as death and he half-heartedly fought. He had not heard Ember's cries and though he fought, he was so tired and the darkness was so inviting...
Almost instantly the chanting stopped, and Jai felt his spirit slump back into his ethereal form. It was dark around him, but he heard a familiar voice.
"It has been written in the scrolls of Fate for your death to occur this day, Jai Templar, but they do not control me so often as they think. I am Death itself, and today is not your day..."

Alec stood, his muscles trembled for the need for revenge. He snarled as he slammed his door behind him. She had it coming. His rage overwhelmed him and he started throwing things at the wall. Glass shattered everywhere and a few shards even cut through Alec's skin.
Ember's eyes were squeezed as shut tightly as they could be,"The witch king."she whispered, her eyes opening just the slightest. She tilted her head up to look at Jai, her body trembling once more as it recalled the pain that Ember had went through when she had almost lost Jai. She reached up and kissed him. She trailed kisses from his forehead down to his neck, before she broke away from him."It is time to prepare for the journey ahead."she whispered, forcing herself away from her mate. She knew she would have to leave right than and there. If she stayed she would want to stay there forever.
Sarafina nodded,"I guess it's time to train."she whispered.

Lauren smiled grimly at the sound of glass shattering. "Fool," she murmured to herself as she headed towards Jai's room.
Jai nodded, rolling out of bed. He shook out his hair slightly and rolled his shoulders, eyes dark. "To war," he said darkly, his green eyes growing dark with an unknown emotion and an unseen strength. The beast inside Jai stirred, growling softly at the prospect of something hurting his mate. Jai would never let that happen, though. Not in a million years. He turned, met Ember's gaze, and nodded silently. He was healed enough to fight. It was his job to protect Ember, and a little flesh wound wouldn't stop him.
Malachi sighed. "I suppose so," he murmured in response. Oh, how he missed being that mortal Ryland, ignorant to the Raven-world, surrounded by his family and his children. How he missed that peace.

Ember nodded, she was not ready to lose any of her kind. She smiled at Lauren,"Hey! I'm gonna go train with my dad and Jai. Wanna come?"she asked, she pause to glance back at her best friend. She headed on down the hall,"Dad? You down here?"she called, fighting the urge to smile.
Sarafina tilted her head,"Can you explain something to me?"she asked, her voice soft. She turned to look at Malachi. Her red curls bobbing slightly in the wind.

"I suppose," Malachi responded, eyeing her carefully.
"Sure," Lauren said with a shrug. "I seem to have pissed your brother off." She grinned mischievously. "I think he's throwing some things about in his room right now. I wouldn't go and mess with him." She looked proud of her actions, finally standing up to the big bully Alec.
"Hm?" Unole responded, glancing up from the tax papers he'd been working on. "Yes, I'm here. What's up, Ember? Oh, hello Jai. Hello, Lauren." He smiled in turn to Ember's companions, and Jai and Lauren tilted their heads in greeting and respect. Unole was well-loved among the Schimba people, and had earned the reputation of being utterly benevolent. The Schimba King rarely had a mean streak. Instead, he tried to approach things from a humanitarian point of view. He didn't like to see people hurt in any way.

Ember laughed softly,"Serves him right."she said with a nod of her head. She glanced up at her father,"Hey daddy. Ready to report for training."she said, saluting her father, smiling. She couldn't contain herself though and she threw herself in her father's arms."I love you, Daddy."she whispered,"Oh and I have to tell you something.. Lauren said no. Apparently my bread ring wasn't the type she wanted."she joked, nuzzling her father. She broke free of him and than trotted back to Jai's side, entwining their fingers together as she did so. She leaned her head on Jai's shoulder, her mood souring just the slightest. They were going to war after all.
